Woman, grandchild killed as truck rams auto-rickshaw

A woman and her grandchild were killed and two others were injured as a truck hit an auto-rickshaw in Dhaka's Rupnagar area on Monday morning.

The deceased were Salma Begum, 55, and Rinta Akter, 11.

They came to Dhaka from Lalmonirhat three days ago to visit family members.

The accident happened around 6:00am when Salma, Rinta, her elder sister Alina Jahan Rima were heading towards Ashulia in the auto-rickshaw driven by Rinta’s uncle Sohel Rana Salek, said Salma’s daughter Sheuli Begum.

The two injured were under treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

Rupnagar Police Station sub-inspector Lokman Hossain said that as the auto-rickshaw reached near Pump House area on Rupnagar Beribandh, a truck hit the vehicle, leaving Rinta dead on the spot.

Salma was declared dead after she was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 12:00pm.

Sheuli said her mother along with the two grandchildren came to visit her relatives in Adabar three days ago. They were on their way to Sheuli’s house in Ashulia when the accident took place.

The truck driver fled the scene after the accident.
