The Anti-Corruption Commission has decided to ask Sonali Bank Limited to initiate departmental proceedings against an official of the bank for taking extra charge with passport fees.
The commission’s secretary M Anower Hossain Howlader will send a letter to Sonali Bank’s managing director for taking departmental action against its Moghbazar branch’s former officer Delower Hossain, a commission director told New Age.
He said that a service seeker had filed a complaint with the commission and provided a video recording showing that Delower charged the client one per cent extra in addition to passport fees and did not mention the extra charge in the receipts.
The commission began investigating the allegations in January 2019 and obtained evidences about them.
The commission found out that Delower collected Tk 5-20 extra from each client as the ‘bank commission’ beyond the system, the ACC official said.
About the matter, Delower, now working at Ishwar Chandra Street branch of the bank, told New Age that he had collected the extra charges following instructions of his superiors and deposited them with the bank.
When asked that why he did not mentioned the amount in clients’ receipt, he said that it was also order of his superiors.
Moghbazar branch manager Babul Ahmed Siddique told New Age that there was no way of collecting any amount from clients without providing receipts.
He said that he had transferred the official from the branch for his non-professional attitudes.
The fee, including tax, for a passport is Tk 4,025 in case of regular delivery and Tk 6,325 in case of express delivery.
