A union parishad member was shot dead at Baghaichari Upazila Parishad complex in Rangamati on Wednesday afternoon.
The dead is Samar Bijoy Chakma, 38, member of ward number‑1 of Rupkari union at Baghaichari.
Samar Bijoy was involved with Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samity (MN Larma), local people said.
Samar was shot at the room of upazila project implementation office (PIO), said Baghaichari upazila executive officer Shariful Islam.
Upazila project implementation officer Nurnabi Sarkar was present in the room, but was unhurt. None other was injured in the attack, according to local officials.
The UNO suspected that the incident might have taken place over internal feud of hill-tracts based political organisations.

One was on the motorcycle, another was guarding and the other entered the officer’s room and opened fire on Samar before leaving the scene, said the UNO Shariful.
The Baghaichari upazila chairman and the legal affairs secretary of the central committee of PCJSS (MN Larma), Sudarshan Chakma, claimed that PCJSS (Santu Larma) members were responsible for the attack.
However, none of the Santu Larma faction leaders could be reached for comment.
Baghaichari police officer-in-charge Anwar Hossain Khan said that they had started investigation and beefed up security at UNO office and at UP office.
