Artistes pay tribute to Barin Majumder

Renowned and upcoming artistes from both Bangladesh and India paid tribute to the late eminent music exponent Barin Majumder at a two-day music festival held on Sunday and Monday.

Government Music College arranged the event marking the birth centenary of Barin Majumder, who founded the college in 1963.

The festival, titled Pandit Barin Majumder Music Festival 2021, was streamed live on the Facebook page of Government Music College. The event featured performances by 35 artistes and discussion on Barin Majumder.

Education minister Dipu Moni inaugurated the festival while education secretary Md Mahbub Hossain and directorate of secondary and higher education director general Syed Md Golam Faruk attended as special guests at the inaugural ceremony. Indian classical maestro Guru Pandit Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay and classic singer Abanti Bhattacharjee also attended the programme as guests.

Bangladeshi artistes Syed Sajid Hussain, Fakir Shahidul Islam, Mangal Chandra Mandal, Rinat Fawzia, Nasir Ahmed, Rashedul Haque Jibon, Kumar Das, Abdul Khalek Azim, Soumita Bose, Afroza Rupa, Jobayda Islam Bonna and others along with Indian artistes namely Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, Anup Jalota, Abanti Bhattacharjee, Santanu Bandyopadhyay, Sri Govinda Chakraborty, Krishnakanta Acharya and Asit Roy performed at the two-day event.

Barin Majumder was born on February 15, 1921 at Radhanagar in Pubna.

He was honoured with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Ekushey Padak, Independence Award, Shidhu Bhai Memorial Award, Best Performer Award, Janakantha Pioneer Award, Rabindra Award and others for his contribution to music scene.

He passed away on March 3, 2000.
