A prison inmate was beaten to death by another inmate in Kishoreganj jail early Tuesday.
The deceased was Abdul Hye, 27. Another prisoner named Jahangir was also injured and now undergoing treatment at Kishoreganj Genera Hospital.
Kishorganj deputy commissioner Mohammad Shamim Alam said that they had formed a three-member probe committee led by additional district magistrate Abdullah Al Mausd.
The committee was asked to submit their report within three days while the jail authorities also formed a separate probe committee.
Kishorganj jail superintendent Bazlur Rashid told local reporters that five accused were confined in Cell 11.
Of them, Sayeed Mia, an accused in a rape case, beat up Jahangir and Hye with a wood, leaving the two critically injured at 4.30am.
They were taken to the hospital, where the on-duty physicians declared Hye dead.
Hye was accused in a narcotic case filed by his family. He was in jail for a month.
The family wanted to cure his drug abuse and so, sent him to jail as a way for rehabilitation, said family members.
Security was tightened in the jail soon after the incident and Sayeed was shifted to an isolated room.
Sayeed has been in jail since 2017 on charge of raping and murdering his sister-in-law.
Superintendent of Kishoreganj police Mashrukur Rahman Khalet and district magistrate Mohammad Ashraful Alam visited the prison after the incident.
