Illegal sand lifters tortured a journalist after tying him with a tree at Tahirpur in Sunamganj on Monday morning because he was taking snapshots of illegal sand lifting from the River Zadukata.
The victim — Kamal Hossain, son of Abdur Razzak of Kamraband village under Tahirpur upazila — is the organising secretary of the Tahirpur Upazila Press Club and the local correspondent of Dainik Sangbad.
Local residents said that a group of an organised syndicate lifted sands cutting the bank of the River Zadukata at Badaghat in violation of an order issued by the local administration.
Kamal went to a sand-lifting site at about 9:00am and was taking snapshots of illegal sand lifting, they said.
Noticing the matter, the sand lifters attacked Kamal and snatched away his camera, cell phone and motorcycle. They also tortured him inhumanly after tying him with a tree near Ghagatia Bazar, the locals said.
Tahirpur police inspector (investigation) Dipankar Bishwas confirmed New Age of the incident of torturing the journalist.
He said that a team of Badaghat outpost of the police went to the spot after receiving the news and sent the victim to Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex.
‘The victim was shifted, later, to Sunamganj General Hospital for better treatment,’ the police officer told New Age in the evening.
The police were trying to recover the camera, mobile phone and motorcycle of the reporter, he also said.
He added that legal steps would be taken against the alleged attackers and illegal sand lifters after receiving a written complaint of the victim against them.
Kamal told his colleagues that a group of sand lifters led by Rais Miah, Deen Islan and Mahmub of Ghagatia village attacked him and tortured him tying with a nearby tree near the local bazar to scare other journalists off their illegal activities.
