A supporter of the ruling Awami League’s rebel candidate in Kalapara municipal polls was attacked by the ruling party-backed mayoral candidate’s supporters at Kumar Patti of the municipal town in Patuakhali on Tuesday evening.
The victim, Rakibul Islam Dipta, 24, is the organising secretary of Kalapara upazila unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
The ruling party’s municipal unit president, Bipul Haldar, also incumbent mayor, is the ruling party mayoral candidate and its general secretary, Didar Uddin Masum, is also contesting for the post of mayor in the election.
Locals said that Dipta was attacked allegedly by Bipul’s supporters while passing through Kumar Patti area of the town.
The locals rescued Dipta and took him to Kalapara Upazila Health Complex, from where doctors referred him to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Bipul Halder, however, denied the allegation.
Kalapara police station officer-in-charge Khadkar Mostafizur Rahman said that the police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
