The police on Monday foiled a pre-scheduled discussion meeting and rally of the Ganosamhati Andolan at Nababganj upazila Shaheed Minar on the outskirts of the capital.

The party organised the programme to mark the 144th birth anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani and local party leaders took the permission of the upazila nirbahi officer on January 12 to hold the programme on January 25, Monday, a party press release said.

But on January 24, Nababganj police requested the organisers to postpone the programme, considering the law and order situation of the area and deployed police personnel since Monday morning to prevent any rally there.

Founder trustee of Gansasthya Kendra Zafrullah Chowdhury, Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki and others were scheduled to speak at the programme.

Nababganj police officer-in-charge M Sirajul Islam Sheikh, however, claimed that Ganosamhati Andolan’s claim was baseless and that they had no communication with any representative of the organisation in connection with any programme.

‘They might have canceled their programme and blamed the police for it,’ he claimed.
