The 57-year-old man who was hacked to death near High Court in the capital on Saturday night was a leader of Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal.
The deceased, Hamidul Islam, was a resident of Goalkandi College Road of Bhaluka upazila town in Mymensingh.
‘Hamidul, father of two children, was a man of good soul. He was our party’s Shahbagh unit general secretary and cooperative affairs secretary of Dhaka South City unit,’ said Bangladesh Jasad president Sharif Nurul Ambia.
Condemning the murder, he demanded arrest of the killers and bring them to book and alleged that the country had no safety and security for the common people.
Hamidul lived in Moyuree Apartment at capital’s Segunbagicha and had been a cable network service provider in Segunbagicha area for over 30 years.
Shahbagh Police Station sub-inspector Golam Hossain Khan said that the victim’s wife Nargis Begum and brother Shahidul Islam identified the body at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue early Saturday and the body was handed over to the family in the afternoon after post-mortem examinations.
Shahidul Islam told New Age that the family had no knowledge about whether he had enmity with anyone.
Shahbagh Police Station officer-in-charge said that they assumed that Hamidul might have been killed in the stabbing of snatchers as his mobile phone and wallet were lost.
‘However, we have been investigating into the killing considering all the possible aspects,’ he said.
He said that a case was lodged with his police station accusing unidentified assailants but none was arrested.
