Bashundhara Kings and Abahani Limited secured their third consecutive win while Police Football Club tasted their first victory in the Bangladesh Premier League in two separate venues of the country on Saturday.
Defending champions Kings beat Brothers Union in the day’s first match at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Cumilla by a solitary goal.
In the day’s other two matches at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, last edition’s runners-up Abahani defeated Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society 1-0 while Police beat Uttar Baridhara Club by the identical margin.
In Cumilla, all-losers Brothers kept their post intact in the first half but Kings’ Brazilian forward Robson Da Silva scored the match-winner in the 64th minute. Robson poked the ball home to score his third goal of the league after a cut-back from midfielder Mohammad Ibrahim.
In Dhaka, record six-time champions Abahani had to toil hard before midfielder Jewel Rana scored the all-important winner in the 79th minute.
Jewel headed the ball home, connecting a header by Haitian forward Belfort Kervens from inside the box following defender Rayhan Hasan’s throw-in.
In the day’s third and final match, Ivory Coast midfielder Fredric Pooda gave Police a much needed win with a diving-header from a goalmouth melee in the 81st minute.
With the day’s results, Kings and Abahani earned identical nine points from three games but Kings were leading the 13-team league table by virtue of scoring more goals.
