The killing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed councillor-elect Tarikul Islam in Sirajganj was planned by his rival candidate and ward Awami League general secretary Sahadat Hossain, police said at a press conference on Friday.
Superintendent of police in Sirajngaj Hasibul Alam addressed the press conference at Sadar police station after the arrest of another accused in the case Zahidul Islam in the capital’s Jatrabari on Thursday night.
He said that in interrogation, Zahidul and another accused Swapon Bepary admitted that they had planned to kill Tarikul on January 15 night.
Sirajganj sadar municipality ward-6 councillor-elect Tarikul was killed in post-election violence on January 16 soon after the announcement of the unofficial results of the polls.
Defeated councillor candidate and the ward AL general secretary Sahadat Hossain, his supporter Zahidul and Swapon were among 32 people named in the case filed for the killing.
Victims’ son Ekramul Hasan Ridoy filed the case on January 17 accusing another 40–50 unnamed people.
Police arrested Swapon and Zahidul. The rest of the accused, including prime accused Sahadat, are still in hiding.
The police officer said that Zahidul was directly involved in the killing. Getting information from him police recovered the knife used in the killing from a pond near his house.
Additional superintendent of police Snigdha Akter, officer-in-charge of the police station Bahauddin Faruqui and investigating officer Tarikul Islam, among others, were present.
