A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Friday granted an eight-day remand for a domestic help and her husband in a case of looting money and valuables after torturing her elderly female employer stripping her naked on January 18 in the capital’s Shahjahanpur.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masud Ur Rahman passed the order against the couple, Rekha, 28, and her husband Farhad alias Ershad , 40, of Demra in the capital after hearing a petition filed by the investigation officer seeking a 10-day remand for them, said Shahjahanpur police station sub-inspector Rezaul Karim who has been probing the case.

He said that he produced the couple before the court on Friday afternoon, a day after a team of Shahjahanpur police arrested them from Kashipur, a bordering village of Ranishankail and Baliadangi upazilas in Thakurgaon, early Thursday.

Rekha used to work as a temporary domestic help at the Shahjahanpur house while her husband, a former garments worker, is now unemployed, said Shahjahanpur police station sub-inspector Rezaul Karim who led the team that arrested the couple.

He said that Rekha, after committing the crime, took shelter at a house in Demra and when different television channels started covering the incident of theft, the couple fled to Thakurgaon and took shelter in Rekha’s maternal uncle’s house.

Rezaul said that they seized Tk 49,700 in cash, gold ornaments and the mobile phone that she looted from the Shahjahanpur house.

CCTV footage of the torture showed that Rekha, at about 10:30am on January 18, forcibly stripped the elderly woman, who has been suffering from kidney diseases and other old-age complications, and dragged her to the attached bathroom where she was doused and brought her back in the room where she was beaten severely with the stick she used to hold for walking.

As the elderly woman surrendered helplessly, Rekha grabbed the victim’s gold chain and key of the cupboard and forced the victim to open it.

Later, Rekha took the cash, the gold ornaments and a mobile phone set from the cupboard and fled the house after locking the elderly woman in her room, said the case statement.
