Two treasury bench members of parliament on Thursday proposed that the under-construction Padma Bridge should be named after prime minister Sheikh Hasina for her contribution to country’s development and progress.
Awami League MPs Pankaj Nath and Mohammad Iqbal Hossain made the proposal while taking part in the thanksgiving motion on the president’s speech at the parliament.
‘I want to propose that Padma Bridge should be named after our prime minister, who is a symbol of development and initiative,’ Iqbal said.
He also said that as prime minister is a modest person, she will not agree with the proposal.
‘But we have some responsibilities and accountability too,’ Iqbal added.
Later Pankaj Nath also made similar proposal.
He said that the PM took a bold decision to go ahead to implement the project with the country’s own fund, when donors cancelled their funding to it. ‘She [Sheikh Hasina] is a modest person but we are not ungrateful,’ he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, a Supreme Court lawyer filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directive on the authorities concerned of the government to name Padma bridge as ‘Sheikh Hasina Bridge’ considering her contribution to the project.
