Yet another housewife was stripped and tortured in Noakhali recently by a group of miscreants in a village of Chanandi union under the district’s island upazila of Hatiya.
The incident that happened on January 1 came to light when its video made by one of the perpetrators went viral on Saturday.
The occurrence came four months after a similar incident took place in Begumganj upazila on September 2, 2020, which went viral on October 4, 2020.
After the video became public, the country had witnessed violent street protests at rape, violence against women and culture of impunity for about three weeks.
Amid the protests, the government in October 2020 amended the relevant law raising the highest punishment for rape to death from life-term imprisonment.
The 32-year-old Hatiya victim on January 5 filed a case over the incident with the District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 that asked the Hatiya circle additional superintendent of police to submit an investigation report in seven working days after receiving the order.
The video filmed by one of the offenders shows that some people were torturing a stripped woman and in the process dragged and threw her in a room while she was trying in vain to save her honour.
One of the offenders is shown hitting a wall of the room with a stick.
Police went to the village on Saturday to investigate the incident.
According to the case lodged by the victim, local goons Zia alias Zihad, Faruque, Enayet, Bhutto Majhi and Faruque stormed into her residence on January 1 in the absence of her husband and tried to rape her.
Failing to rape her, the miscreants stripped and tortured her videoing the incident with a mobile phone, she alleged.
The miscreants fled the scene as locals rushed to her house on hearing the cries of her and her children, she further alleged.
Later, she went on, her husband after coming back home got admitted her to Noakhali General Hospital where she underwent treatment for two days.
The hospital’s resident medical officer Syed Mohiuddin Abdul Azim told New Age that a housewife of Chanandi union had been admitted to his hospital with torture marks earlier this month and took treatment there.
Hatiya circle additional superintendent of police Golam Faruque said that he, after receiving the court order, went to the spot on Saturday and would submit the report to the court in two or three days.
The additional SP said that they were trying to nab the offenders.
