Three to die for Kakrail double murder

Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Session Judge’s Court judge Md Rabiul Alam on Sunday sentenced three people to death in a case filed over killings of a woman and her son in Kakrail area of the capital in 2017.

The convicts are - victim Shamsunnahar’s husband Abdul Karim, Karim’s third wife Sharmin Akter Mukta and Mukta’s brother Al-Amin Johny.

Prosecutor Mohammad Salahuddin Hawlader said that the court also fined each convict Tk 20,000 in addition to their death sentences.  

Housewife Shamsunnahar, 46, and her youngest son Sajjadul Karim Shaon, 18, an A-level student, were hacked to death at their Kakrail residence on November 1, 2017.

Shamsunnahar’s brother Ashraf Ali filed a murder case with Ramna police station in Dhaka on the following day.

Police arrested Karim and Mukta on November 3, 2017, for their alleged involvement in the killings.

The Rapid Action Battalion on November 4, 2017, arrested prime suspect Johny from Moksedpur upazila of Gopalganj. Johny gave confessional statement before a Dhaka magistrate on November 8, 2017.

Ramna police sub-inspector Ali Hossain pressed charges against Karim, Mukta and Johny on July 16, 2018, and the court framed charges against the trio on January 31, 2019.

The court testified a total of 17 prosecution witnesses out of 22 until November 1, 2020, and the trial was completed on January 10, 2021.
