The price of refined sugar has continued to rise for the last one month on the retail markets in the capital, Dhaka and the retail price of the item reached Tk 70 a kilogram on Monday.
The retail price of sugar increased by Tk 5 a kg in the last one week and the item sold for Tk 67-70 a kg on the kitchen markets in the city on Monday.
Traders said that the price of sugar rose on the local market as the price of the item had maintained an upward trend on the international market for the last two months.
They said that the wholesale price of sugar increased and refiners also hinted at increasing more the mill gate price of the item in the coming week.
‘The price of refined sugar has maintained an upward trend on the local market for the last one month and the wholesale price of the item increased to Tk 62 a kg from Tk 57 a kg in the period,’ Md Salahauddin, a trader at Moulvi Bazar in Old Dhaka, told New Age on Monday.
He said that the price of sugar continued to increase on the local market due to a price hike of the item on the international market.
Although the sugar sold for Tk 62 a kg on wholesale market in the city on Monday, the refiners hinted at increasing the mill gate price of the item to Tk 63.5 a kg soon, Salahauddin said.
Zakir Hossain, a retailer at Karwan Bazar, said that the price of sugar increased by Tk 200 a mound (37.32 kg) in the last one week and the item was selling for Tk 2,370 a mound on the wholesale market on Monday.
The price of sugar has been increasing almost every day in the last one week on both retail and wholesale markets, he said.
