At least 25 people were injured in a series of clashes between activists of the ruling Awami League and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party at Sripur in Gazipur on Sunday.
The clashes ensued after the ruling party activists allegedly attacked and vandalised BNP mayoral candidate’s election campaign office at Railgate point in Sripur town in Gazipur at about 11:30am.
BNP mayoral candidate Kazi Khan alleged that over 100 Al leaders and activists led by the municipal AL unit general secretary Nure Alam Molla attacked his election campaign office while he was talking to his supporters.
The ruling party activists were all armed with iron rods, hockey sticks and sticks, alleged Kazi Khan.
He alleged that the AL activists vandalised the office and also injured at least 15 of his activists.
Nure Alam Molla, on the other hand, alleged that the BNP activists attacked their peaceful procession at Railgate area and injured at least 10 AL activists by throwing brick bats on them.
Witnesses said that both the groups were engaged in chasing and counter chasing and clashes after the AL men’s attack on the BNP election campaign office and the shops in the nearby area were closed in fear.
Gazipur assistant superintendent of police (Kaliakoir-Sripur) Md Al-Mamun told New Age in the evening that the situation was calm in the area and none made any complain to the police.
Additional police forces were deployed in the municipal area, he said.
Gazipur district election officer Mohammad Istafizul Haque Akanda said that the police, immediately after hearing the news, went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
He said that the BNP candidate was getting round-the-clock police assistant and police forces were deployed at his house as he alleged insecurity.
