At least two people were killed and 20 others injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over occupying a piece of government land at Baniachang upazila in Habiganj.

The dead are Idris Ali alias Kancha Mia, 73, and Nurul Haque, 50, police said. Both of them are residents of village Balla Gazipur at Baniachang upazila.

Locals said that there was an enmity between the families Nurul Haque and his neighbour Alai Mia over occupying the land.

The clash began after both the families tried to occupy the land in the afternoon.

Supporters of Nurul Haque and Alai Mia armed with locally made weapons, namely spears and billhooks, got into a clash at about 3:00pm.

Baniachang Police Station officer-in-charge Emran Emran Hossain told New Age that they went to the spot at 4:00pm and dispersed the people.

The injured people were sent to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital with the help of locals, he adds.

‘Among them, Nurul died on his way to the hospital and Kancha Mia died after admitting to the hospital,’ the officer said.

The dead belonged to rival sides. The bodies were sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, added the officer.
