A man took his life by stabbing himself in the chest in the Habiganj court premises Monday afternoon after losing in a legal battle to get back his wife and daughter.

The deceased was Hafizur Rahman, son of Nur Miah of Kamrapur under Sadar upazila in the  district, the police said.

Local people said that Hafizur married Bushra Begum, daughter of Abdul Khaleque of Khagaura under Baniachang upazila in the same district several years ago. Bushra also gave birth to a girl.

Later, Bushra went to her father’s home following a quarrel over family affairs after telling Hafizur that she was no more interested to stay with him, court officials said.

Hafizur filed a case with the District Judicial Magistrate’s Court to get back his wife and daughter, they said.

Bushra on Monday appeared before the court for the scheduled hearing and said that she did not want to stay with her husband, they said.

Following her statement, the court rejected the claim of Hafizur and directed Bushra to stay in her parents’ home along with her daughter, according the court officials.

A frustrated Hafizur stabbed himself in his chest with a knife immediately after coming out of the court, eyewitnesses said.

Habiganj Sadar police officer-in-charge Md Mashuk Ali told New Age that Hafizur was sent to Habiganj Sadar Adunik Hospital in a critical condition from the spot.

‘Later, the victim was referred to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated and he died on his way to the hospital,’ the OC said.

He said that the body was taken to Habiganj Sadar Adunik Hospital for post-mortem examination.
