Speakers in a webinar on Thursday demanded the introduction of satellite accounting system to recognise the contribution of women in the country’s agriculture and livestock sector.
They said that a large number of women engaged in the agricultural and livestock was remained out of the current accounting system under the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.
Only 15 per cent women workers of the sector were recognised under the current accounting system, said the speakers while taking part in the webinar arranged by Manusher Jonno Foundation, an NGO.
Member of Parliament Saber Hossain Chowdhury, agriculture ministry secretary Meabahul Islam and vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University Lutful Hassan attended the webinar, among others.
About 48 per cent of country’s 5.67 crore workforces remained engaged in agriculture, according to a survey prepared by Professor Ismat Ara Begum of the Department of Agricultural Economics of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh.
She said that women account for 64.8 per cent workforce in the agriculture sector.
Manusher Jonno Foundation has been running a campaign highlighting the women’s contribution in both paid and unpaid work, the NGO said in a press release on Thursday.
