Process to hand over the maintenance responsibilities of 26 canals of Dhaka from Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority to Dhaka’s two city corporation has been started.

Local government and rural development ministry on Thursday formed a 14-member committee for giving recommendations to the government in this regard within a month.

LGRD minister Md Tajul Islam, DSCC mayor Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh, DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam, and Dhaka WASA managing director Md Taqsem A Khan, among others, were present at the programme held at the LGRD ministry.

Dhaka south and north city mayors were asking the authorities concerned to hand over the capital’s canals maintenance responsibilities to them arguing that they were facing the public criticism for the failure of the WASA in this regard.
