A judicial magistrate’s court on Sunday placed another suspect in police custody for interrogation for five days in a case filed over the killing and torching of ex-librarian Abu Yunus Md Shahid-un-Nabi Jewel in Lalmonirhat on October 29 over rumours of disrespecting the Quran.

Senior judicial magistrate Ferdousi Begum granted the remand for the suspect, Russell Islam Raj alias Bishu, 22, son of Hamidul Islam of Jummapara at Burimari under Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat.

He was arrested by the Detective Branch on Thursday.

The police, meanwhile, arrested Abu Kalam, 29, son of Paramdin of Bamandal under the same upazila, Saturday night in connection with the lynching of Abu Yunus from Rangpur.

Kalam was produced before the same court Sunday afternoon and a five-day remand was sought for questioning, said DB inspector Mahmudunnabi.

On October 29, a former college librarian, Abu Yunus, was beaten, killed and burnt at Burimari by a group of people, who accused him of dishonouring the Quran in a local mosque.

So far, 36 people have been arrested in three separate cases.

One of the cases was filed by the victim’s cousin Saiful Alam and the second case by Burimari union parishad chairman Abu Syed Muhammad Newaz Nishat and the third case was filed by Patgram police station sub-inspector Md Shahjahan.
