Women rights organisation Naripokkho on Sunday condemned Bogura-7 constituency lawmaker Md Rezaul Karim Bablu’s recent remarks in the parliament claiming linking women’s dresses to rape.

In a statement on Sunday, Naripokkho said that feminism and women’s dresses or lifestyle were not responsible for the incidents of violence against women, rather it was the mind-set of men that fuels such violent crimes.

Protesting at the remarks of the member of parliament, the rights organisaiton blamed the absence of rule of law and culture of impunity for increased incidents of violence against women and sexual assault.

According to the statement, the lawmaker said that ‘incidents like rapes have increased in the country and the feminists are responsible for that’. He also said that rapes have a link with girls coming out in the streets wearing T-shirts, the statement mentioned.

Naripokkho said they were surprised that neither the speaker nor any lawmaker protested at the remark made in the parliament.
