Ctg woman burnt by husband referred to Dhaka

A woman, whose lower part was set alight by her husband at Rangunia in Chattogram, was referred to Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka by the doctors of Chattogram Medical College Hospital on Saturday for better treatment. 

Victim Yasmin Akhter, a woman in her thirties and a mother of 4-year-old son, was tortured and burnt by her husband during an argument over dowry.

Yasmin Akter, daughter of Harunur Rashid of Kadamtli at Rangunia, was married off to union Swechchhasebak League general secretary Md Rasel, 35, son of Shafiqul Islam of Swandwippara of the upazila eight years ago.

CMCH burnt unit head Rafiq Uddin said that Yasmin received 40 per cent burns and they referred her to Dhaka as her condition was critical.

Chattogram assistant superintendent of police (Rangunia circle) Anwar Hossain said that the couple got in an argument on Thursday night as Rasel had reportedly pressurised her for dowry.

Anwar said that Rasel doused the lower part of Yasmin with petrol and set her on fire.

When Yasmin was groaning, Rasel called her mother and said, ‘I have burnt your daughter. Call the police.’

Anwar also said that the victim’s parents rushed to Rasel’s house and took her to CMCH for treatment.

Local union parishad member Abdul Malek said Rasel was always arrogant’

‘We have ‍settled his family problems several times in past few years,’ he added.

On Friday evening, police arrested Rasel, hours after the victim’s father filed a case with Rangunia Police Station accusing Rasel, confirmed Rangunia Police Station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam.
