The police on Saturday pressed charges against suspended gardener Robiul Islam over the attack on then Ghoraghat upazila nirbahi officer Wahida Khanam and her father at her official residence in Dinajpur early September 3.

Dinajpur district Detective Branch officer-in-charge Imam Abu Zafar and also the investigation officer of the case submitted the charge sheet before a local court against Robiul who worked as a gardener at the residence.

Investigators said that Robiul was angry with Wahida as he was suspended for allegedly stealing Tk 50,000 from the UNO’s house.

The furious Robiul sneaked into the house early September 3 and hit Wahida and her father Omar Ali with a hammer.

The court also recorded a statement of the accused under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Imam said that the charge sheet was prepared against the accused on the basis of the forensic report and an intensive investigation.

He said that DNA samples found at the place matched Robiul’s, adding that he also made a confessional statement before the court after two phases of remand in police custody.

On September 3, UNO Wahida’s elder brother Sheikh Farid Uddin filed a case with Ghoraghat police station in connection with the attack.

The Rapid Action Battalion initially arrested a local Juba League activist and two house painters claiming that they had confessed to making the attack.

Later, police arrested Robiul and said that he was the lone attacker.

The father and the daughter were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital hours after the attack, from where they were shifted to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka in a critical condition.

Their condition improved after a month of treatment there.
