DEPZ garment workers in sit in demanding wages

Workers of A1 BD Limited, a garment factory of Dhaka Export Processing Zone, began a sit-in demanding unpaid wages of 10 months on Tuesday.

Several hundred workers started the indefinite sit-in in front of Ashulia Press Club at Savar in Dhaka.

Before that they brought out a procession on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway.

Agitated workers said that they were not given any payment since January although they were pressing for the demand time and again.

Without paying wage the management shut down the garment in April.

Over 1,100 workers of the factory were given over 19 deadlines to pay them but all missed.

Garment workers Ujjal, Alamgir, Ashraf and Sumi among others spoke at a rally.

Labour leaders, including Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation president Rafiqul Islam Sujan, Garment Workers Trade Union Centre Ashulia unit general secretary Manjurul Islam, Bangladesh Garment Sramik Sanghati social welfare secretary Dipok Roy, Asulia unit general secretary Ziadul Islam expressed solidarity with the movement.
