The Anti-Terrorism Unit, a specialised unit of the Bangladesh Police, on Sunday arrested a man on charges of spreading hate speech, extremism and making efforts to destabilise the country at Hathazari upazila in Chattrogram.

The arrested is Mohammad Ali, 43, of West Dewannagar village in the upazila.

Sources at the ATU headquarters in the capital said that a special team of the unit raided West Dewan Nagar at about 2:30pm acting on secret information and arrested Ali at Nurjahan Manjil of Eastern Residential area.

The law enforcers seized Ali’s cellphone and recovered a booklet of seven pages from his possession, said Md Aslam Khan, media superintendent of the ATU headquarters.

He said the accused had long been trying to create anarchy, disrupt peace in society and deteriorate the law-and-order situation in the country by hurting religious sentiment. He also spread hate speech and provocative messages on Facebook against the government and the Bangladesh Police.
