Dhaka south city mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Wednesday declared that all illegal shops at the city corporation markets would be evicted soon.

‘We will conduct a drive against them without giving any concessions,’ he said after visiting city corporation markets at Kaptan Bazar.

Several hundred illegal shops were built at DSCC markets over the years by grabbing parking and other spaces.

Some corrupt DSCC officials in collusion with the market committee had built shops to make money.

‘I have inherited a lot of problems like this,’ he said.

Mayor denied the allegation of waste dumping in the river Buriganga and said that DSCC was working to restore the original Buriganga channel.

DSCC appointed Military Institute of Science and Technology as a consulting firm who has already submitted a preliminary report, he added.

‘We will restore the original Buriganga and create a healthy and aesthetically pleasing environment there,’ he said.

DSCC high officials among others were with him during the visit.
