Kalyanpur slum fire victim dies

A man who sustained burn injuries on Friday’s fire incident at Kalyanpur Natun Bazar slum in Dhaka died at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn Plastic Surgery on Sunday afternoon.

Deceased Anwar Hossain, 21, died at the intensive care unit of the hospital, said the institute’s residential surgeon Partha Sankar Pal.

Anwar suffered 75 per cent burns, said the doctor adding that another teenage victim of the fire, Akter Hosssain, is in a critical condition with 40 per cent burn injuries.

Both of them were employees of Nannu Miah’s recycling shop at the slum situated on the Housing and Building Research Institute land.

The belongings of over 55 families living in Kalyanpur Natun Bazar slum burnt to ashes while over 200 families were affected in the fire that broke out on Friday night.

Slum dwellers said that within a moment the fire spread that burnt tin-shed houses, business establishments and injured four at the slum erected on the government land.

They said that the fire originated in a waste recycling shop in the slum.
