Help desk set in six wards to provide services

Six help desks were set in six different ward councillors’ offices of Dhaka North and South City Corporation recently to provide essential services to the urban poor directly.

Councillors said that the help desk made them more accountable to the residents particularly to the slum dwellers.

Help-desk is a new idea in city where the ward councillors meet weekly one day dedicatedly with the poor people who couldn’t meet their councillors in any need.

Roughly more than three million poor and marginalised people live in Dhaka slums in the lack of adequate civic services like water, sanitation and housing.

Non-government organisations Resource Integration Centre and Solidarities International under their ‘Slum-based Citizen Action Network’ in short SCAN project supported by the European Union set the desk on pilot basis.

They set the desk at DNCC’s ward no 2, 3 and 5 and DSCC’s ward no 22, 24 and 25 already, said a press release.

The project coordinator of RIC SMA Muyeed said that the main objective of the desk was to make a bridge between urban poor people and local government representatives to get services.

Poor people have no scope to meet their public representatives. This is a scope to share their problems with them, he said.

DSCC ward no 24 councillor Mokaddes Hossain Zahid said that the desk would help them to understand the civic problems very closely and solve them immediately.

‘It is not always possible for me to meet poor under the traditional system but now they can talk to me directly,’ he said.

He said that the desk would help to ensure transparency and accountability of local government representatives.
