Eight people, including seven of a family, who suffered burn injuries in a gas cylinder explosion in Mithamoin upazila of Kishoreganj Saturday, were shifted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.
Of the victims, an elderly woman died on Sunday while five others were in critical condition, said the institute’s resident surgeon Partha Sankar Pal.
The deceased was identified as Sufiya Begum, 65, who had 75 per cent burn injuries.
She died at the Intensive Care Unit of the institute in the afternoon, Partha said.
Nine people sustained burn injuries in the blast on Saturday afternoon, said police.
The injured were initially rushed to Jahurul Islam Medical College Hospital in Kishoreganj’s Bajitpur.
One victim was released from the hospital after giving first aid while the others were shifted to the burn institute in Dhaka on Saturday night.
Partha said that two were released after primary treatment and the rests were admitted to the institute with over 50 per cent burn injuries for each.
Mithamoin police officer-in-charge Zakir Rabbani said that the gas cylinder exploded when Sufiya tried to turn on a burner.
Police suspect that the incident might have happened because of a leak on the supply pipe of the cylinder.
