The Dhaka South City Corporation on Sunday asked internet and television cable service operators to lay out their overhead cables underground by November and said that the corporation would not conduct drives against the overhead cables till then.
‘Cable television and internet service providers have committed to lay out their overhead cables underground by November and the DSCC will not conduct mobile courts to remove overhead cables till then,’ mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh told reporters after a meeting.
The meeting with the leaders of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh and Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh was held at Nagar Bhaban, a day after the associations had cancelled their scheduled 3-hour service disruption protesting at the city corporation drives.
Taposh said that the ISPAB and COAB would start laying out overhead cables underground at Dhanmondi today.
The DSCC will not charge them any fee for road cutting, he said.
ISPAB president MA Hakim said that as the DSCC allowed them cutting roads without any charge, the subscribers’ bills for the services would not increase.
He said that they would try to complete the task within the time given by the mayor and then, if they needed more time for particular cases, they would further talk to the mayor.
COAB president SM Anower Parvez, among others, was present in the meeting.
A number of Nationwide Telecommunications Transmission Network operators, who are mainly responsible for the major underground cables, said that they were unaware about the meeting.
On September 1, the DSCC started removing overhead cables as the cables were making a jungle on city roads risking public life.
On October 12, the ISPAB and COAB at a press conference warned that they would carry out symbolic three-hour internet and cable television services’ blackouts every day from October 18 if their demands were not addressed by October 17 and the DSCC continued with cable cutting.
