The second edition of the Science Film Festival, a partnership between the Goethe-Institut and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), is under way online due to the COVID-19 crisis, said a press release.

The festival, which commenced on October 1, is featuring 24 films. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Sustainable Development Goals’.

All films are either available in English or with English sub-titles and five films for younger learners are available with Bengali subtitles. Besides, a few films have been dubbed into Bengali.

Goethe-Institut Bangladesh has cooperated with the Bangladesh-based partners JAAGO Foundation, Teach for Bangladesh, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD at ULAB), South Point School & College, Oxford International School (OIS), Maple Leaf International School, European Standard School (ESS) and Mastermind International School to bring the festival to Bangladesh.

The inaugural ceremony of the Science Film Festival 2020 was held on Wednesday, 7 October, 2020 afternoon through a Zoom meeting. United Nations resident coordinator in Bangladesh, Mia Seppo and associate professor and director of the Centre for Sustainable Development, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, Samiya A Selim were present as guests at the opening ceremony.

Welcoming the distinguished guests and attending students from different schools, Kirsten Hackenbroch, director, Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, in her welcome speech said, ‘The festival is 100% virtual this year, which is a great chance to reach a larger audience all over Bangladesh. At the same time the challenge is to bring the festival to those students who do not have regular access to mobile devices - something we strive to achieve with our partners JAAGO, Teach for Bangladesh and the UN in Bangladesh.’

Expressing her delight at the inauguration of the international Science Film Festival in Bangladesh, Mia Seppo, the UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh, in her opening speech said, ‘The Science Film Festival comes at a moment in time when facts and science have become increasingly contested. “Discover - Experiment - Explore” is what the festival seeks to achieve.’

Viewers can register themselves visiting www.goethe.de/ins/bd/en/kul/prj/ssf.html. The festival will conclude on December 20.
