Agitating workers of an apparel factory closed in August amid the coronavirus crisis blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Kalameshwar point of Gazipur city for around seven hours demanding payment of their wages and allowances.

Workers of Bando Fashion, a factory of Creative Group, began to gather at the factory gate at about 11:00am to press for their dues, which was scheduled to be given by September 27.

Later, at about 12:00pm, the protesting workers blocked the highway causing huge congestions on both ends of the point as the management of the factory announced that their dues would be provided partially, said industrial police inspector Islam Hossain.

The general manager of the factory, Syed Mahmud Faysal, said that the total due was Tk 6.18 crore but they managed Tk 1.9 crore and proposed the workers to take a part of their dues on Wednesday and the rest by October 25.

But, the workers, without accepting the proposal, began to demonstrate and blocked the highway.

Inspector Islam Hossain said that the agitating workers withdrew their blockade at about 7:00pm after getting assurance from the district deputy commissioner who came to the spot and held a meeting with representatives of the workers and the factory officials.
