Gono Forum advances towards a split for the first time as a group of leaders on Saturday at an extended meeting at the National Press Club decided to hold a national council session of the party on December 26 in Dhaka.

Dissident leaders led by Abu Sayeed, Subrata Chowdhury and former general secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu at a joint press conference announced the decision following the meeting.

Abu Sayeed told the press conference that the central committee members of the party unanimously made the decision to hold a national conference of the party on December 26 for resolving the ongoing leadership crisis of the party.

He urged the party president, Kamal Hossain, to stay with them and to join their national council session which would elect a new central committee.

In order to make the national conference successful, a 201member committee led by Mostafa Mohsin Montu will be formed, the dissidents announced.

The dissident group said that it had expelled existing general secretary Reza Kibria for his alleged failure to call central committee meetings and to run organisational activities.

They also accused Reza of taking part in various anti-party activities.

The rival group also expelled central leaders Mohsin Rashid, AOM Shifiqullah and Mostaque Ahmed.

|It claimed that a total of 283 leaders from 52 districts units, among 60 district units of the party, attended the extended meeting.

Party president Kamal Hossain told New Age that some leaders of his party convened extended meeting although they had no right to hold any such meeting.

Mentioning that Saturday’s extended meeting went against the party’s constitution, Kamal Hossain asked the dissidents not to involve in any more activities that violates the party constitution.

He, however, refrained from making any comment on the expulsion of four party leaders, including general secretary Reza Kibria.

The leadership crisis in Gono Forum began after Reza Kibria was appointed Gono Forum general secretary at the party’s special council session on April 26, 2019 without any election process.

Leaders and activists were divided over his appointment.

Dissident group leader Abu Sayeed said that Reza had violated the party constitution by not holding any central committee meeting since the committee formation on May 5, 2019.

Kamal Hossain on March 4, 2019 dissolved the central committee of the party and formed a 71-member central ad-hock committee keeping Reza as general secretary.

Gono Forum was formed on November 4, 1993.

In last general election, Gono Forum was a partner of Jatiya Oikya Front and party leader Mokabbir Khan was elected a member of parliament for Sylhet-2 constituency.
