Indonesian GM Susanto wins Sheikh Hasina Online Chess

Indonesian Grand Master Susanto Megaranto clinched the Joytu Sheikh Hasina International Online Chess Tournament title in a tiebreaker on Saturday.

Three GMs – Susanto, India’s Sunilduth Lyna Narayanan and Iran’s Amin Tabatabaei – secured identical seven points after nine rounds but Susanto was adjudged champion after a tiebreaker while Narayanan and Tabatabaei placed second and third respectively.

FIDE Master Subrato Biswas, FM Mohammad Javed and International Master Abu Sufian were the highest scoring Bangladeshi competitors in the event, each scoring six points and finishing 12th, 14th and 15th respectively.

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly of India, who was the highest rated player in the tournament with a rating point of 2646, finished 10th.

Two Bangladeshi GMs Enamul Hossain and Reefat Bin-Sattar finished 17th and 21st respectively, bagging 5.5 points each while country’s top-rated player, GM Ziaur Rahman, finished 22nd with five points.

A total of 74 players, including 17 Grand Masters, from fourteen countries took part in the three-day long tournament, organised by the South Asian Chess Council in association with the Bangladesh Chess Federation.

Some 47 Bangladeshi players competed from the Canadian University of Bangladesh venue in the online event, which marked the 74th birth anniversary of prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
