AL obstructs BNP campaigns in by-elections: Rizvi

Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday said that the musclemen of the ruling Awami League obstructed the election campaigns of the BNP candidate in Pabna-4 constituency by-elections scheduled for today.

Speaking at a press conference at party’s Naya Paltan central office, Ruhul Kabir said that the ruling party candidate’s men forced the opposition BNP candidate’s supporters to refrain from taking part in the election campaigns.

Moreover, in Naogaon-6 constituency, the ruling party miscreants foiled an election preparatory meeting of the local BNP on Thursday, Rizvi alleged.

In the attack the Atrai BNP unit convener Mohammad Mosharraf and others were injured, Rizvi said.

‘We are getting sings of unleashing hooliganism by the Awami League men in the up-coming by elections in the country’ Rizvi said.

He called on the BNP leaders and activists to resist the attacks with the support of the local people of the election constituencies.

Rizvi, called on the government to take measures to stop hooliganism and punish the persons responsible for the attacks.

BNP nominated Habibur Rahman Habib, Awami League candidate Nuruzzaman Biswas and Jatiya Party’s Rezaul Karim are contesting the by-polls.

The Jatiya Sangsad seat of Pabna-4 was vacant after the death of AL member of parliament Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu on April 2.

The by-election to Naogaon-6 will be held on October 17 and BNP nominated Sheikh Mohammad Rezaul Islam as party candidate here, Rizvi said.

Central leaders of Abdus Salam, Syed Mohammad Shamsul Alam and others attended the press conference.
