Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Wednesday pace bowler Abu Jayed tested COVID-19 positive as the team was preparing for the Test series against Sri Lanka, starting next month.
‘Pace bowler Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi has reported positive for COVID-19. He will receive treatment in isolation for COVID as per guidelines and will undergo further tests in due course,’ BCB physician Debashis Chowdhury told reporters.
The BCB said it took samples from 27 cricketers called up for a skill training camp Tuesday but only Jayed’s report came positive.
Jayed’s COVID-19 infection came as a blow for the BCB, which was still negotiating the condition for quarantine with the Sri Lankan authorities.
Jayed, who played nine Tests and claimed 24 wickets, is expected to play a vital role if the series takes place, having started for Bangladesh in all recent Test matches.
Opening batsman Saif Hassan tested COVID-19 positive on September 9 but has since recovered, confirmed a BCB official.
