The police arrested a constable and another youth on charge of snatching a mobile phone and money from three workers in Outpara area under the Basan police station in Gazipur city on Saturday.
The arrestees are Imrul Hasan, 26, a constable of Kashimpur jail complex police camp in Gazipur and son of Mujibur Rahman of Bhatigajaria under Sadar upazila in Jamalpur, and Aminul Islam, 25, son of Ansar Mandal of Uriabari under Gopalpur in Tangail.
Local people said that they caught the two people when the victims cried out for help and then handed them over to the police.
Basan police sub-inspector Mosharrof Hossain, quoting the case lodged by one of the victims, Rezaul Islam, said that Rezaul, a mason’s helper, and two of his colleagues were going to Konabari from Chandana in Gazipur city on foot and, at about 3:00am, Aminul and Imrul waylaid them posing as detectives.
As the victims declined to give their mobile phones and money, the duo took them to Outpara area by an auto-rickshaw, he said.
He said that the duo then snatched a mobile phone and Tk 2,000 from Rezaul but declined to take the victims to the police station.
The victims cried out for help and caught the duo with the help of local people, he said.
New Age correspondent in Barishal reported that a youth, Shamim Ahmed, on Saturday in a press conference said that he had lodged a case against his neighbour and police sub-inspector Kamal Hossain for ‘snatching’ Tk 1.10 lakh and a motorbike in the past week.
He said that Kamal ‘snatched’ his money and the bike for protesting at construction of a building without maintaining any regulations.
Kamal’s cellphone was found switched off.
Kotwali police sub-inspector and investigation officer of the complaint, Rejaul, said that they had received the complaint, but declined to share the details.
