Govt-backed syndicates responsible for onion price hike: BNP

Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Wednesday alleged that the Awami League-backed business syndicates were responsible for the abnormal price hike of onion and others essential goods in the country.

While addressing a press conference at party’s Naya Paltan central office, Ruhul Kabir said that there was no crisis of onion and a huge quantity was in stock.

When Indian government had stopped exporting onion to Bangladesh on Tuesday, the unfair hoarders created the artificial crisis, Rizvi said.

The government had failed to stop price hikes of the essential commodities specially the vegetables, he said.

The government-backed business syndicates increased onion price about three times than normal price, he alleged.

BNP joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokan, organising secretary Emran Saleh Prince, central leaders Abdus Salam Azad, Aminul Islam and others attended the press conference.
