A housewife in Pabna committed suicide on Tuesday having allegedly failed to pay installments of a loan.
The incident took place at Hagragari village in Faridpur upazila.
The deceased is Sabina Khatun, 35, daughter of freedom fighter Habibur Rahman and wife of Hafizul Islam of the village.
The victim’s family said that Sabina’s husband took a loan of Tk 70,000 from the Bhangura branch of Centre for Development Innovation and Practices.
During the COVID-19 epidemic, Hafizul’s income decreased and the couple had failed to repay the loan installments for the last five months.
On Tuesday morning, the NGO field workers Arikul Islam and Raihan Kabir pressurised Sabina into paying the full installments in the absence of her husband, said the victim’s family members, adding that at one stage they locked into an altercation.
Later Sabina went into her room and committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling.
Relatives took her to Bhangura Upazila Health Complex, where duty doctors declared her dead.
Denying the allegations, CDIP manager Mahmudul Islam said, ‘The housewife called us to pay the installments on her own. So the field officials went her home. We did not have any quarrel with her.’
Bhangura upazila nirbahi officer Syed Ashrafuzzaman said that the accused NGO had acted against the law and the government instructions.
Legal actions will be taken in this connection, he said.
