The price of green chilli has soared with the item selling for up to Tk 320 a kilogram on the kitchen markets in the capital on Monday.
Traders said that the price of green chilli started increasing from mid-May as floods hampered the production of green chilli and damaged farmland in several districts across the country.
They said that green chilli had been selling for over Tk 200 a kg since July and recently the price had increased further in the city due to an acute supply shortage of the item.
Green chilli sold for Tk 200-240 a kg in the city in early August but the price jumped in the last two days.
Green chilli was selling for Tk 280- 320 a kg on the different kitchen markets in the city on Monday.
Helal Uddin, a retailer at Mohammadpur Town Hall Market in the capital, told New Age that the price of green chilli exceeded Tk 200 a kg on the wholesale market due to the supply shortage.
He said that the supply of the item decreased from both the local and import sources.
