Police on Thursday arrested two officers of postal department for their alleged embezzlement of Tk 46 lakh.
The two arrestees were assistant postmaster-6 Nur Mohammad, a resident of Khorondwip village of Boalkhali upazila and counter operator Sarwar Alam Khan, a resident of Borohatia village of Lohagara upazila in Chattogram.
General Post Office Chattogram inspector Rajib Paul said that the accused were working in the Savings Department of the GPO.
Assistant Postmaster General Md Nizam conducted sudden visit on Wednesday at its savings department and found that the two accused withdrew Tk 46 lakh. When they were interrogated, the accused confessed to taking the money.
They were later handed over to police.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police CMP assistant commissioner (Kotowali Zone) Nobel Chakma said that usually the accused used to collect the depositors’ money and withdrew it.
Police recovered Tk 21,49,000 from Nur Mohammad and the rest Tk 23,51,000 were still missing.
