Univs, organisations observe National Mourning Day

Different organisations observed National Mourning Day in a befitting manner on Saturday marking the 45th death anniversary of Bangladesh’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his family members and other relatives on August 15 in 1975.

Bangladesh University of Professionals organised various programmes including hoisting of national flag at half-mast, recitation of the Qur’an, special prayer, discussions on Sheikh Mujib’s biography online and screening of documentary on Bangabandhu.

BUP vice-chancellor Major General Ataul Hakim Sarwar Hasan joined the online programme as chief guest while pro-VC M Abul Kashem Mozumder was special guest. Professor of Bangabandhu Chair Syed Anwar Husain, BUP high officials, faculty members and students also participated in the online discussion.

United International University observed National Mourning Day through virtual discussion and prayer session.

UIU vice-chancellor Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman presided over the discussion while pro-vice chancellor (in-charge) Hasnan Ahmed, School of Business and Economics Professor Mohammad Musa and School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Hamidul Huq, also director of Bangabandhu Study Centre, delivered their respective speech.

The UIU joint registrar, retired lieutenant colonel Md Fazlul Hoque, was the anchor of the programmes and BBA program deputy director Kawsar Ahmmed conducted the prayer session at the end of the discussion.

Daffodil International University brought out a rally from the main campus and placed floral wreaths at portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka.

Syed Mizanur Rahman Raju, director of student affairs, along with Md Anowar Habib Kazal, senior assistant director (PR), M Hassan Parvez, coordinator, GED, and a large number of faculty members and officers.

To mark the day a virtual discussion was arranged on campus TV. Former chief information commissioner M Golam Rahman was present as the chief guest in the discussion and presented keynote paper on Sheikh Mujib.

DIU acting vice chancellor S M Mahabubul Haque Majumder presided over the function also addressed by DIU alumnus and lyricist Farzana Boby Chumki.

Gas Transmission Company Ltd hoisted the national flag at the head office and regional offices of the company.

Recitation from the holy Quran and recitation of the whole Qur’an were completed at the head office at 8:00am.

A delegation led by the senior secretary of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources, a delegation of Petrobangla led by its chairman, a delegation of BPC led by its chairman and the representatives of companies of Petrobangla in Dhaka named TGTDCL, Bapex and RPGCL led by their managing directors laid wreaths in the morning.

The National Mourning Day was observed by Jamuna Oil Company Limited at Jamuna Bhaban in Agrabad of Chattogram.

The day’s programme began with managing director Md Gias Uddin Ansary placing floral wreath at ‘Mujib Corner’ of Jamuan Bhaban premises on behalf of the company.

CBA general secretary Md Yakub, officers, workers and employees were present on the occasion.

Milestone College organised elaborate programmes including hoisting of national flag at half-mast, wearing black badges, prayer and memorial discussion.

Discussion meetings and prayer ceremonies were held in compliance with hygiene due to the COVID-19 endemic.

Milestone principal retired lieutenant colonel M Kamaluddin Bhuiyan and administrative director Md Masud Alam were present as honourable guest at the programme.
