Businessman alleges intimidation for filing case against police

The businessman who filed a case against police on accusation of extortion alleged that his family was facing threats and intimidation since filing of the case with a Dhaka court on Monday.

The clothes trader from Keraniganj, Sohel Mir, said on Tuesday that Dhaka’s Kotwali police station assistant sub-inspector Shahinur, one of the accused, threatened with consequences after the filing of that case.

‘Some of other accused police officers were waiting at the premises of chief metropolitan magistrate court and Shahinur approached us. He threatened with dire consequences because of the case,’ said Sohel’s wife Sabina Abedin on Tuesday.

Sohel on Monday filed the case with Dhaka’s chief metropolitan magistrate court against five policemen, including the Kotwali police station officer-in-charge, on charge of extortion by threatening ‘crossfire’.

The court has instructed the Police Bureau of Investigation to investigate the case.

The accused are Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman, sub-inspectors Pabitra Sarkar and Khaled Sheikh, assistant sub-inspector Shahinur, constable Mizan and police source Motaleb.

He said that the cops extorted Tk 3.5 lakh from his family after arresting him and intimidating with crossfire.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police authorities so far have not taken any action against the accused cop till Tuesday afternoon.

DMP officials rather claimed that Sohel had criminal records and they were investigating that.

‘Sohel is a drug trader. A case was filed against him under narcotics control act. Police are finding out details about him,’ said Biplop

Bijoy Talukder, deputy commissioner of Lalbagh division.

Responding to a question, he said, ‘We did not get any instruction from the court yet. After getting direction we will fix our next course of action.

Despite repeated calls and texts, the accused cops could not be reached.

The division additional deputy commissioner, Muhit Kabir, said that they were inquiring into the allegation, but so far found that Sohel has criminal records. Police are digging into those allegations also, he added.

The police officers said that they have found a case filed against Sohel with Keraniganj south police station under the narcotics control act.

When asked about that case, Sohel claimed that one of his cousins filed the case against him five years ago because of a family feud.

He also filed a case then for harassment. ‘The trial in the case is running.  Police are trying to take advantage of the case,’ he said.

He demanded a neutral investigation into the case.
