The Election Commission is likely to announce the schedules for Dhaka-18 and Pabna-4 by-polls at the end of this month as there is a constitutional obligation to hold the elections by September 24, said EC secretary M Alamgir.
He said that the commission held a meeting at Nirbachon Bhavan in the capital on Monday to discuss about the pending polls.
He said that the commission was planning to hold a meeting on August 23 or August 24 to set polling date for the parliamentary constituencies that felt vacant following the deaths of ruling Awami League lawmakers.
He said that the commission was also planning to hold polls to some local government bodies. Announcement of the schedules for the civic polls will start at the end of this month, he said.
According to EC officials, elections to at least 333 local government bodies, including city corporation, municipality, zila parishad, upazial parishad and union parishad, have remained pending due to COVID-19 outbreak and flood situation.
Earlier on July 20, the EC decided not to hold parliamentary by-elections in 90 days if any constituency fell vacant amid the COVID-19 crisis.
The Pabna-4 constituency fell vacant due to the death of Awami League lawmaker Shamsur Rahman Sherif on April 2.
The Dhaka-18 parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of AL lawmaker and former home minister Shahara Khatun on July 9.
