A group of youths attacked the four-wheel-drive car of parliament member and Gono Forum presidium member Mokabbir Khan at Bishwanath upazila headquarters in Sylhet on Monday noon.
Local people said that the supporters of Bishwanath upazila chairman SM Nunu Miah launched the attack as a consequence of his conflict with the local lawmaker Mokabbir Khan over establishing dominance in the area.
When contacted, Mokabbir claimed that a group of youths launched a sudden attack on his car at around 11:30am when the vehicle reached the Bishwanath upazila nirbahi officer’s office and broke down its windowpanes.
‘The attack was pre-planned. Someone incited it,’ the lawmaker alleged, adding that he could recognise two of the attackers — Shamim Ahmed and Siraj.
The MP, who was elected as a candidate of Jatiya Oikya Front, said that he went to the Bishwanath upazila headquarters to attend the meeting of law and order affairs committee of the upazila scheduled to be held at noon in the UNO office.
Bishwanath upazila chairman SM Nunu Miah, however, denied his any kind of enmity with the lawmaker and said the incident of attacking on the MP’s car was not fair.
‘A quarter is spreading baseless rumour centring the incident,’ he claimed.
Upazila unit AL president Firoj Khan Panki condemned the attack and demanded arrest of the attackers within 24 hours.
‘The incident of attack on the lawmaker’s jeep in presence of police proved that law and order situation has deteriorated seriously in the Bishwanath,’ he said.
Bishwanath police officer-in-charge Shamim Musa said in the evening that no written complaint was filed with the police in this regard so far.
