Former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Md Zafrin Sheikh, 32, made a statement before a Khulna court on Monday reportedly confessing to the murder of three villagers in firing at Mashiali in Khulna on July 16.

Investigation officer in the case inspector Enamul Huq placed Zafrin before the court of Khulna metropolitan magistrate on completion of his 13-day remand in police custody in two phases, court officials said.

‘He confessed to his involvement in the murder,’ said a release issued by Khulna Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner (headquarters) Kanai Lal Sarkar.

On July 26, the case was handed over to Detective Branch of Khulna Metropolita Police from Khanjahan Ali police for investigation.

With Zafrin, four accused — Md Jahangir Sheikh, 35, Md Arman Sheikh, 20, and Rahim Akunji, 22, all associates of Zafrin and residents of Mashiali, — have so far been arrested, police officials said.

They said that they were yet to arrest prime accused Khanjahan Ali thana Awami League assistant publicity secretary Sheikh Zakaria Hossain and 17 of his accomplices who reportedly used firearms during the July 16 firing.

They said that they failed to recover the firearms used in the firing.

Zafrin is a brother of Zakaria.

According to the complaint, some villagers on July 16 went in front of Zakaria’s house and locked in an altercation and, at one stage, Zakaria’s brother Zafrin and Milton and their associates opened fire on villagers that killed Nazrul Islam, 60, Golam Rasul, 30, and Saiful Islam, 22, and injured six.
