Two killed as AL feuding groups clash in Patuakhali

At least two people were killed in a fierce clash between two feuding groups of the ruling Awami League at Keshobpur bazar in Patuakhali Sunday evening.

Both the victims Rumon Talukder, 30, and Ishraque Hossain, 24, belonged Juba League, the youth wing of the ruling party, police said adding that Rumon was Keshobpur union vice-president of the organisation while Ishraque an activist. They were also nephews of Md Slauddin Piku, president of Keshobpur union unit of Awami League.

Party leaders said the party’s Keshobpur union unit was divided over a long-running feud between the president and its general secretary Mohiuddin Ahmed Lablu, who is also chairman of Keshobpur union parishad.

Bauphal upazila AL office secretary Md Farid Ahmed told New Age that he was informed about the clash on Sunday and he believed it was a sequel to a clash on Friday.

Officer-in-charge of Bauphal police Mostafizur Rahman told New Age that critically wounded Rumon and Ishraque were taken to Bauphal Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared them dead at about 9:00pm.

He said that they had raided the area and detained four people in connection with the clash.
