Padma Bridge construction shades, rail girders vanish into river

Some construction shades and railway girders of under-construction Padma Multipurpose Bridge project vanished into Padma river at Munshiganj point between Friday night and Saturday morning due to strong current and swelling water, said officials.

The project director Shafiqul Islam acknowledged the incident but refused to give further details.

The exact amount of damages to the project was yet to be known immediately.

Meanwhile, ferry services on Shimulia–Kathalbari route on the river remains suspended till Saturday afternoon due to erosion and strong current.

Earlier on Friday evening ferry services on Shimulia–Kathalbari route on the River Padma was suspended in the face of strong current and erosion.

Prafulla Chowhan, duty officer at Shimulia terminal office under Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation, told New Age on Saturday noon that since Friday night some local construction shades and railway girders vanished into the river for erosion.

In the afternoon the rate of erosion, however, came down in the area, he said.
